Consequently, I suggest to follow one of the most important and relevant <strong>security frameworks<\/strong> available, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isaca.org\/resources\/cobit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>COBIT<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>ISO 27001<\/strong> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/cybersecurity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NIST<\/strong><\/a>. Primarily, this is a introductory post about the general <strong>security <\/strong>concepts your entity needs to have in place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Technical Measures: the concept of &#8220;<em>appropriate<\/em>&#8220;<\/h2>\n<p>Since I work in the GDPR jurisdiction, I&#8217;d start the brief analysis with the help of the text from the art 32, <strong>GDPR<\/strong>. Critically, all the measures to put in place must be <em><strong>appropriate<\/strong><\/em><em>. <\/em>Easy, isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>Well, yes&#8230; but no. Your company should select the security measures depending of the following parameters:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>firstly, state of the art<\/li>\n<li>next, the costs of implementation<\/li>\n<li>then, the nature, scope, context and purposes of processing<\/li>\n<li>finally, the risk and severity for the rights and freedoms of natural persons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now things start to have more sense. Incidentally, the art 32 GDPR is also a very strong argument against the <em>blues singers<\/em> . They usually say: &#8220;<em>The GDPR mandates the same security measures for a big multi-national company and for a SME<\/em>&#8220;. <strong>Nope<\/strong>: the measures should be <em>appropriate<\/em>. Therefore, the measures will be different, according to the mentioned parameters.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the art 32 <strong>GDPR<\/strong> also mentions a different parameter to evaluate the <em>appropriateness<\/em> of the security measures. Actually, they have to (reasonably) ensure a level of security appropriate to the <strong>risk<\/strong> related to the processing. As a result, the riskier the processing, the more robust the security. It makes sense, doesn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Minimum requirements<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the vague definition of the appropriateness, your company can start adopting at least the following measures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the pseudonymisation and encryption of personal data<\/li>\n<li>tools to ensure the ongoing <strong>confidentiality<\/strong>,<strong> integrity<\/strong>, <strong>availability<\/strong> and resilience of processing systems and services<\/li>\n<li>tools to restore the availability and access to personal data in a timely manner in the event of a physical or technical incident<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, regular testing, assessing and evaluating of the effectiveness of implanted measures must be carried out. Did I mention &#8220;<strong>regularly<\/strong>&#8220;?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Assessing the appropriateness<\/h2>\n<p><em>How do I know if my measures are appropriate? <\/em>Assess them, taking a close look to the risks presented by the processing. As an illustration, ask yourself the following questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Can we reach our goal with more secure technologies?<\/li>\n<li>How much do they cost?<\/li>\n<li>Will they be easy to implement?<\/li>\n<li>Is there any method to calculate the return of investment?<\/li>\n<li>Are my employees correctly trained?<\/li>\n<li>Can you avoid accidental or unlawful destruction, loss or alteration of the information?<\/li>\n<li>Can you prevent unauthorized disclosure?<\/li>\n<li>Are the rights to access correctly distributed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>A short list of security measures categories<\/h2>\n<p>Again, <strong>not a comprehensive list<\/strong>, but still a starting point. Based on the brand-new <strong>ISO 27002<\/strong>, you may implement the following <strong>technological controls<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>first, privileged access rights<\/li>\n<li>second, information access restrictions<\/li>\n<li>then, protection against <strong>malware<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>next, monitoring activities<\/li>\n<li>finally, use of <strong>cryptography<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do you want know more?
