I can proudly affirm that I have recently earned the <a title=\"CIPM\" href=\"https:\/\/iapp.org\/certify\/cipm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CIPM<\/strong><\/a> certification from the <a title=\"IAPP Home page\" href=\"https:\/\/iapp.org\/\"><strong>IAPP<\/strong><\/a>, what what does it mean <em>being a CIPM<\/em>? Firstly, I devoted my (scarce) free-time to get prepared for the certification exam, consulting the digital version of the <strong>Privacy<\/strong> Program Management book and keeping constantly updated with the news in the <strong>privacy<\/strong> domain.<\/p>\n<p>Although, what does a <strong>CIPM<\/strong> is for? What did I learn? Let&#8217;s have a global look to the <strong>CIPM<\/strong> daily routine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Certified Information Privacy Manager, Task 1: Privacy Program Management<\/h2>\n<p>Being a <em><strong>privacy pro<\/strong><\/em> (whatever it means) is not enough in order to provide a professional service to your clients.<\/p>\n<p>On one hand, you may know all the secrets of obtaining the <strong>consent<\/strong>; but, on the other hand, you need to deal with the <em>secrets<\/em> of managing a program. Otherwise, you&#8217;ll be the <em>savant<\/em> who knows everything about the <strong>data protection legislation<\/strong> but you&#8217;re unable to provide a viable solution to a specific problem in a <strong>timely manner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>&#8230; Task 2: Privacy Governance<\/h2>\n<p>First thing first: <em>&#8220;Vision and Mission&#8221;<\/em>? Do we really need to start from that?<\/p>\n<p>Well, it depends. If the Vision and Mission chapter in your home page is just an empty statement, you better avoid to even mention them.<\/p>\n<p>In that case, you should also review your entire program: is the C-level really committed? If you&#8217;re unsure of the answer, I&#8217;ll tell you a secret: the answer is <strong>no<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In order to have a viable and useful <strong>Privacy Governance<\/strong> program, you should have the following points fully covered:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vision and Mission;<\/li>\n<li>Scope;<\/li>\n<li>Framework(s) you&#8217;ll use;<\/li>\n<li>Tools and Vendors available;<\/li>\n<li>Your Team (if any&#8230;);<\/li>\n<li>A Governance model (suggestion: centralized models rarely work&#8230;);<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>reporting structure<\/strong> (if you don&#8217;t report your work, you don&#8217;t even exist).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Certified Information Privacy Manager, Task 3: Privacy Laws and Regulations Inventory<\/h2>\n<p>A key moment, in order to establish your program. &#8220;<em>Oh, that&#8217;s easy. I&#8217;m just a small European company. It&#8217;s all about the <strong>GDPR<\/strong>, right?<\/em>&#8220;. Well, &#8220;<em>yes<\/em>&#8221; but also &#8220;<em>it depends<\/em>&#8220;. Are you sure that the brand-new <strong>Colorado privacy legislation<\/strong> is not applicable to your entity? What about the <a title=\"CCPA\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/California_Consumer_Privacy_Act\"><strong>CCPA<\/strong><\/a>? Are you aware of it? Does it apply to your company? Not sure? Drop us an <a title=\"Contacto\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amedeomaturo.com\/contacto\/\"><strong>email<\/strong><\/a> and let&#8217;s talk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>&#8230; Task 4: Data Assessment<\/h2>\n<p>Inventories, records, <strong>impact assessments<\/strong>, <strong>vendors management<\/strong>&#8230; Complicated, isn&#8217;t it? Well, once again, <em>it depends<\/em>. For example, we rely on a specific tool, which helps us in dealing to all those Data Assessments tasks, prioritizing efforts and, at the same time, maintaining the tracks of all the tasks, according to their status.<\/p>\n<h3><em>No more blurring email interchanges, where you don&#8217;t know who did what<\/em>.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Certified Information Privacy Manager, Task 5: Policies<\/h2>\n<p>Drafting, amending, proposing, approving, reviewing internal and external policies can be demanding and, in most cases, time consuming. <strong>Don&#8217;t get stuck in a loop of infinite changes<\/strong> of uncountable versions. We have the right tool for your entity.<\/p>\n<p>You are <strong>not based in the EU,<\/strong> are you? So, you think you can&#8217;t use our tool. We even asked the <strong>Spanish DPA<\/strong> (<a title=\"Derecho de Acceso y sus posibles abusos\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amedeomaturo.com\/blog\/derecho-de-acceso-y-sus-posibles-abusos\/\"><strong>Agencia Espa\u00f1ola de Protecci\u00f3n de Datos<\/strong><\/a>) for the official instructions in order to comply with the legitimate rights and don&#8217;t disrupt our operations in a substantive way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Certified Information Privacy Manager, Task 7: Training and Awareness<\/h2>\n<p>A successful <strong>privacy program<\/strong> must count on a solid Training and Awareness program. Otherwise, your well-written policies will be forgotten\/ignored in a matter of weeks (have you said &#8220;<em>days<\/em>&#8220;?).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>&#8230; Task 8: Technical Measures<\/h2>\n<p>Protect, protect and protect! The technical measures are the essential parts of your defense. It&#8217;s mandatory to put in place all the resources available (according to your needs, specific sector, size, maturity, <strong>risk <\/strong>appetite, etc.), in order to protect the <strong>personal data<\/strong> you&#8217;re a <strong>controller<\/strong> of. And don&#8217;t forget to check that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>they are in place;<\/li>\n<li>fulfilling the purpose of security;<\/li>\n<li>they are deployed in an efficient manner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Certified Information Privacy Manager, Task 9: Data Breach Incident Plans<\/h2>\n<p>Yep, &#8220;<em>s**t happens<\/em>&#8220;: it&#8217;s useless to ignore this fact. A <strong>CIPM<\/strong> has always a <em>Plan B<\/em> to deal with this incidents. Are you ready for a &#8220;<em>worse-case scenario<\/em>&#8220;?
