Right to explanation and the GDPR

After a long and busy summer, I finally had the chance to take a serious look to a paper called “Why a right to explanation of automated decision-making does not exist in the General Data Protection Regulation“. You can find a copy of this paper in this link: it worths a close reading!

Here, I just want to share my enthusiasm for this work. I was convinced that in the GDPR there was a legal base to audit algorithms and verify if they comply with the new data privacy regulation. Apparently, I wasn’t alone in this misinterpretation (see note 6, p. 3).

But, after a close look to articles 13-15 and 22, I should separate my whishes from the reality. And I have to admit that the authors were right: there is no right to explanation in the GDPR.

44 pages, full of information and solidly argued. Have fun!
